JuiceBox Energy, a privately-held Silicon Valley company committed to providing safe, reliable, intelligent, and connected energy storage, announces the installation of an 8.6kWh JuiceBox Energy storage system at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Inspired by the ideal of sustainable communities, Appalachian State University seeks to deliver the Southeast’s most comprehensive, progressive sustainability education. The JuiceBox Energy storage system is one of the first self-consumption systems in the mid-Atlantic United States.
JuiceBox Energy applauds Appalachian State University’s leadership in sustainable energy by integrating the company’s energy storage system into the New River Light & Power Company’s renewable energy projects. The utility is owned, operated, and utilized by the university, while also providing electrical service to the town of Boone, NC and surrounding community.
Appalachian State University is installing the solar-charged JuiceBox Energy storage solution at the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment’s Solar Research and Teaching Laboratory located at the University’s State Farm Complex. The facility includes an assortment of roof pole, and ground mounted solar collectors, and has both solar thermal and grid tied photovoltaic capabilities. The Department focuses on the development and use of sustainable or “green” technologies, with an emphasis on renewable energy systems. Several graduate students earning their degrees in the program will base their thesis projects on the system.
Brian Raichle, a Professor in Sustainable Technology in the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment, is spearheading the project. “As electricity rates across the U.S. increase and as utilities adopt time-of-use pricing, economic benefits of self-consumption and smart grid services are emerging,” said Raichle. “By using self-consumption and load shifting, we are trying to see how levelized we can make a residential load appear to the grid. The goal is to promote high penetration of renewables such as solar on the grid. The JuiceBox Energy team has been immensely supportive during the installation and we look forward to continuing to work with them along the way.”
The JuiceBox Energy storage system is an intelligent, 8.6kWh lithium-ion battery system designed for safe, reliable, long lasting power management. It is designed, engineered, and manufactured by JuiceBox Energy based on their company’s years of automotive lithium ion control systems engineering. The system supports both residential and utility demand response programs. Each system delivers more than 10 years of operation or a minimum of 4,000 cycles of dedicated peak shifting, back-up power, energy efficiency, as well as enables participation in emerging interactive energy exchanges. The JuiceBox Energy storage system is housed in an indoor/outdoor, wall-mounted UL-rated enclosure.
