Haleakala Solar has come a long way from its humble beginnings.  In 1977, Founder and Owner, Jim Whitcomb began to install Solar Hot Water Systems for friends and neighbors.  Over the past 39 years Haleakala Solar has emerged into a leading installer of Solar PV and Alternative Energy solutions throughout Hawaii.

To serve the present need for advanced utility grid solutions, Haleakala Solar has developed its core business to include electrical construction services for Smart Grid and Demand Response systems.  As the lead contractor for Hitachi Advanced Clean Energy Corporation (HIACE), Haleakala Solar performs a crucial role in the success of the JUMPSmartMaui initiative.

JUMPSmartMaui is a joint initiative between the government of Japan and the County of Maui to implement a smart grid demonstration project on the island of Maui, Hawaii.  The initiative includes electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and battery energy storage (BES) devices integrated with control systems to implement Smart Grid and Demand Response applications to the local electric utility, Maui Electric Company (MECO).

As part of the JUMPSmartMaui initiative, a showcase demonstration project has been launched where Haleakala Solar is under contract to construct an EV-Park that integrates bi-directional EV Chargers, Energy Storage and Solar PV.  Bi-directional EV Chargers provide the capability to use the battery in the EV to delivery electricity back to the grid at times of peak demand.

The Haleakala solar EV-Park consists of four (4) Hitachi EV-PSC bi-directional EV Charging Stations (total 24kW), 42KW Solar PV and six (6), 19.4kWh, Sunverge Energy SIS units.

As the need grows for Demand Response programs, Haleakala Solar is delivering its experience and skills to integrate Smart Grid and Demand Response products into the Hawaiian Islands electricity market.
