HoltCAT Texas is expanding its solar capacity in Texas once more with a third rooftop system built by PCI Solar at HoltCAT’s new service facility in San Antonio. The system, now under construction, brings total solar capacity on HoltCAT’s San Antonio campus to 620kW. With this new system, PCI Solar has now built over 920kW of solar for HoltCAT Texas’ locations from Waco to Austin to Fort Worth.
HoltCAT and PCI Solar collaborated on a multi-year installation of solar on two buildings at the San Antonio campus, leveraging CPS Energy’s generous solar rebate. The rebate, available for each new system, pays up to 50% of up-front cost. Since the rebate is capped (currently at $80,000 per project), PCI Solar suggested that the most cost-effective way to offset the greatest amount of HoltCAT’s energy use on two buildings at the site was to install one system per building per year. In all, there are now three systems each on two buildings on HoltCAT’s San Antonio
campus.
HoltCAT and PCI worked closely to identify the most viable roof areas and collaborated on a construction schedule which had the least amount of impact on HoltCAT’s daily business operations. Since one of the buildings was in the design phase while installation of solar started on the first building, PCI Solar consulted with architects and builders to ensure that the roof of the new building would be solar-ready.
CPS Energy’s rebate, currently at $1/watt, has been so popular that funding at the earlier level of $1.20/watt has already been committed. After funds for the current $1/watt rebate level are exhausted, the rebate will step down to $0.80/watt. When added to federal tax credits, the total financial incentives at the current rebate level pay for up to 85-90% of the system’s cost in year one.
