With a growing interest in battery storage systems for use with today’s PV solar systems, homeowners and businesses are seeking more value from their solar arrays. The addition of a battery storage system can add significant user benefits at both the residential and C&I levels. However within the inverter manufacturing community its fairly well known that not all PV inverters are capable of AC coupling. Many older generation PV string inverters rely on a grid impedance technique to meet the protective anti-islanding solar array electric utility requirement which means they either will not or cannot work with the hybrid bi-directional inverter used in the typical battery storage system to provide power during grid outage to charge the batteries.
This not always well understood aspect of making battery storage systems with PV solar arrays is an area of misunderstanding and some confusion with the industry today. Find out about this issue, what to be aware of and potential solutions from VARTA Storage’s Robert Magyar Managing Director of Navitus Strategies, a consulting services firm which specializes in the area of PV solar and battery storage. Bob will explain the issue, known as frequency hertz shifting control, provide insights in regard to several current PV string and battery storage inverter firms and explain how this issue impacts both AC coupled and DC coupled battery storage systems.
Attendees will learn:
- Learn the differences in battery charging with PV solar between AC coupled to DC coupled battery storage systems.
- Learn where to find popular frequency shifting protocols which assist in insuring performance compatibility.
- See how to organize your customer site assessments to insure the issue of battery storage inverter to PV string inverters is not over looked.
